Abstract
Travelling for leisure in a zone of violent conflict seems counterintuitive. However, many tourist destinations, such as Egypt, Thailand, Burma, South Africa and Croatia, have confronted or currently face violent conflict or political insecurity and instability. As the outbreak of violence usually leads to an immediate decrease in tourists (Aschauer 2008: 82; Dreyer et al. 2004: 217), it is assumed that the tourist industry has a natural interest in peace and security at travel destinations. As Haufler puts it, ‘surprisingly little attention has been paid to the travel and tourism sector. This is a truly global industry with an obvious interest in peace’ (Haufler 2001a: 669).
