Abstract

The collapse of WTC, and other recent fires in tall buildings has motivated a study to understand the performance of structural frames under fire loading. There are numerous methods in structural fire safety engineering to assess time-temperature input for structural calculations in fire enclosures. This paper presents a way to adopt the concept of travelling fires developed at University of Edinburgh and use it in structural fire safety design based CFD calculations. Several different fire scenarios were designed to compare the temperature variation from the hot layer close to the ceiling. The results show that the general method presented in the paper could be used for assessing temperatures from CFD calculations to use in structural fire safety design.
