Abstract

This paper presents a travelling wave based fault location method for multi-terminal line using all end synchronised data. A sequence filter is used for extraction of traveling wave from fault voltage and current signals and subsequal determination of arrival time of traveling wave at relay end. In the proposed algorithm, using the first surge arrival time of traveling wave at each bus, fault distances are calculated. Fault distances are further modified on same reference bus and fault distance matrix is formed and used for faulted section identification and exact location of fault. The method is tested for multi-terminal lines including a practical grid using PSCAD simulated data. The obtained results show that calculated fault location is not affected by the fault type, fault resistance and noise in the measured signal.
