Abstract

• No significant difference was revealed in the percentage of non-local individuals between the religious and lay communities. • At four of five sites, individuals moved closer to the monastery over the course of their lives. • Irish monasteries were sustained by the local communities rather than by an influx of non-locals. • Religious and lay communities in medieval Ireland were closely connected.
