Abstract
The way present-day Western society pollutes the environment, in particular as a result of the heavy use of personal cars, is described as an instance of behavior that is becoming ethically charged, gambling as it does with the life circumstances and opportunities of future generations. Travel, under any set of standard predictions, is expected to keep increasing, which is in conflict with environmentally sound behavior. The relationship to several psychological phenomena is pointed out, for example: perceived present-day societal problems, the social dilemma, self-serving perceptions, the bystander effect, internal and external inducement of behavior, obedience and compliance, and groupthink. The moral background is also discussed.
