Abstract

Few reports concerning the occurrence and treatment of traumatic periprosthetic fractures of the acetabulum after total hip arthroplasty are available. The association of acetabular fractures and vascular injuries has rarely been reported. We report what we believe to be the first case of combined hip dislocation and acetabular fracture associated with an in situ Charnley hip prosthesis resulting in life threatening vascular injury and go on to describe a novel approach to acetabular reconstruction. This case emphasises the importance of having a high index of suspicion for major haemorrhage in what is usually a low energy injury.
