Abstract

Seven cases of traumatic paraplegia and tetraplegia in ankylosing spondylitis are reported and their radiological and neurological symptomatology described in detail Three types of ankylosing spondylitis were found: (1) bamboo type; (2) railway line type; (3) mixed bamboo and railway line type. The type of fractures and dislocations found was one in extension and its mechanism is discussed. Only in one case the extension fracture-dislocation was combined with lateral dislocation. Trifling accidents may lead to severe spinal cord involvement, and the discrepancy between vertebral cord damage is stressed.
