Abstract

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates of mild traumatic brain injury—also referred to as concussion—range from 1·6 million to 3·8 million affected individuals annually in the USA, with one in five aged younger than 19 years and treated for sports-related or recreation-related injuries. Although our awareness of concussion has increased, our understanding of the nuances of this injury remains a work in progress.
