Abstract

This study examines the care of patients presenting to hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with severe injuries (Injury Severity Score >16), over a 12 week period. One hundred and ninety one patients out of a total of 795 patients for whom data was available had sustained facial injuries. The mechanism of injury in the majority of cases (56%) was road traffic accident. Maxillofacial departments were on site in 111/183 hospitals into which these patients were admitted. In a further 13 units maxillofacial services were available on site despite there not being a unit at the receiving hospital.
