Abstract

This chapter will provide an overview of problem-solving courts (PSCs), including their history, evolution, and basic outcome data. The outcome data presented in the chapter is by no means exhaustive but provides a brief cross section of relevant findings. We have chosen to focus on the largest PSCs, mental health treatment court (MHC), drug treatment court (DTC), and the rapidly proliferating veterans treatment court (VTC) because they are the most studied and consist of populations with trauma histories and related trauma correlates, such as serious mental illness. This chapter will discuss the common comorbidity and differential diagnostic challenges encountered in treatment diversion contexts and how these are impacted by trauma sequelae. This includes common challenges in assessing and managing clients in treatment court contexts. Finally, we will provide suggestions for best practices to improve assessment and management in treatment diversion contexts and to help reduce the potential for re-traumatization of clients.
