Abstract

In the preface, the editors state that this textbook is designed as a comprehensive summary for the anesthetic and general management of the injured patient. Overall, the book does provide a complete text for the practicing anesthesiologist who deals with trauma patients. However, some areas of the text cover many surgical aspects of trauma in excessive detail. The first section of the book, "Basic Considerations," deals with principles that apply to all types of trauma patients. The first two chapters provide the epidemiology of trauma and considerations in the establishment of care priorities in the emergency department. These areas of trauma care are usually not included in most anesthesia textbooks. The third chapter, "Airway Management," deals with the difficult problem of managing the traumatized airway. It presents both simple and complex airway management problems and includes most of the techniques and special tricks known in anesthesia. There are excellent diagrams
