Abstract

Injuries are an integral part of the sports world. Team sports are characterized by high intensity sports activities and frequent sports injuries. Psychological, post-traumatic recovery is a part of the rehabilitation of trauma, as well as physical recovery, so it is important to understand the subjective experience of athletes in the psychological and social field during the rehabilitation process. In order to understand the subjective experience of athletes during rehabilitation process, a qualitative study design was chosen. This research project addresses the subjective experience of the psychological and social factors of injured male athletes in team sports during the course of the rehabilitation process. The subject of the research is the evaluation of the psychological and social indicators related to the rehabilitation of injured team sports athletes with severe sports trauma during three periods of rehabilitation: between the trauma and medical diagnoses, during treatment, and after the re-commencement of athletic activities. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Basing on analyses of previous studies, there were prepared questions, that structured the expressed thoughts of the athletes in order to assess their experiences in different psychological and social dimensions. Validation of the questions was carried out in pilot interviews with two athletes (data were not included in the research data base). The study included six team sports representatives: male players from football, basketball and handball that had experienced severe physical sports injuries and had posttraumatic treatment and rehabilitation and began to participate in sport activities.
