Abstract

The article contains the Syriac text and the Italian translation of a work dealing with the passibility or impassibility of God. It is a treatise on philosophy, dogmatic theology and apologetics, preserved only in Syriac and attributed to St. Gregory the Healer (Thaumaturgus). The author’s argument is as follows: God freely chose to suffer (i.e. suffering human passions) in order to show man that he is superior to all kinds of passion. The Italian translation proposed here is based on the Syriac text edited by J.-B. Pitra (1883) and on the previous edition of P. de Lagarde (1858). The italian version is a very literal rendering of the Syriac text.
