Abstract

Introduction and objectives: hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin disorder. It affects skin regions with apocrine glands namely armpits, intermammary, submammary, inguinal, genital, and perineal areas. We present a case series of patients with HS who underwent surgery at the Dermatology Department of the University Hospital Dr. Manuel Quintela in Montevideo, Uruguay.Materials and methods: a descriptive, observational, and retrospective study is presented. The cases are selected from those operated between November 2019 and August 2021. Sociodemographic and surgical data were obtained from the review of medical records and analysis of the iconographic documentation. Results: a series of 7 patients is analyzed, the mean age was 37 years; the mean duration of disease was 6,4 years. Lesions were more frequently located in the axillary and inguinal region and submammary fold, corresponding to stages II and III of the Hurley classification. 5 of 7 patients had received previous systemic therapies with poor response. In most cases, wide surgical excision and closure with secondary intention healing were performed. Recurrences of the disease occurred in 2 patients and postoperative complications such as bleeding and hyper granulation occurred in 2 of them. Conclusions: extensive surgery followed by secondary intention healing proved to be an excellent technique for the surgical management of this disease.
