Abstract

The importance of neutrophils in fighting infections is clearly evidenced by “Experiments of Nature,” in which various gene mutations cause quantitative and qualitative abnormalities in the neutrophils. In such conditions, patients will suffer from infancy with life-threatening infections that must be treated promptly. In many cases delay in diagnosis and therapy may have serious consequences including death. This article focuses on severe congenital neutropenia, chronic granulomatous disease, leukocyte adhesion defects, and leukocyte motility abnormalities—all conditions that are related to congenital defects of the phagocytes.
