Abstract

We fabricated large-grain c-axis oriented Gd-Ba-Cu-O and Dy-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors with very fine 211 particles and studied their field-trapping properties. Single domain Gd-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors with Ag addition were melt-textured under controlled oxygen partial pressure of 1.0%. The size of Gd-211 inclusions dispersed in the Gd-123 superconducting matrix could be greatly reduced with the employment of ultra-fine Gd-211 starting powder, leading to an enhancement of critical current density. The trapped magnetic field of a bulk Gd-Ba-Cu-O that was 50 mm in diameter reached 2.4 T at 77 K. Large single domain Dy-Ba-Cu-O/Ag bulk was also fabricated in air. The trapped field of a Dy-bulk that was 48 mm in diameter was 1.9 T at 77 K.
