Abstract

A 1-megawatt reactor satellite is assumed to be in a 1000-km circular, geoequatorial orbit. The average steady-state omnidirectional trapped electron flux due to β decay from leakage reactor neutrons is calculated to be of the order of 106 electrons cm−2 sec−1 in the L-shell region intercepted by the orbit (1.11 < L < 1.28). The average mean lifetime is estimated to be 150 days, and approximately 1 year is required to reach steady-state conditions.
