Abstract

Trap Magmatism and Ore Formation in the Siberian Noril’sk Region: Volume 1, Trap Petrology. V.V. Ryabov, A.Ya. Shevko, M.P. Gora. Springer. 2014. 390 p. Hardcover ISBN 978-94-007-5021-0. $114 US. This is Volume 1 of a two-volume set that has been translated and updated from the original Russian version published in 2000 by Nonparel Publishers, Novosibirsk (and republished in 2001). I was pleased to have this opportunity to review this 2014 English translation as I already had the 2000 Russian version of the set. The original 2000/2001 Russian two-volume set was a milestone publication, which provided Russian-speaking scientists and explorationists with a comprehensive summary of the characteristics of the Siberian Trap Large Igneous Province (LIP) and associated ore deposits in the Noril’sk region. These volumes on Siberia are particularly significant given the global import of the Ni-Cu-(PGE) ores of the region, which provide a significant contribution to both global Ni and Pd reserves. They also provide examples of key features required in the search for other “Noril’sks” elsewhere in the world. This Springer-published English translation of the two-volume Russian set provides Western readers with access to this important compendium of information. My review focuses on Volume 1, which is titled Trap Magmatism and Ore Formation in the Siberian Noril’sk Region . In comparison with the original Russian volume, the Springer Volume 1 has some important updates. These comprise inclusion of an abstract at the beginning of each chapter, addition of color to a number of figures, and inclusion of several important new sections, 2.14, 2.15, 2.16, and 5.8. Volume 1 consists of five chapters. Chapter 1, “Principal issues surrounding trap magmatism of the Siberian platform,” provides a summary of the general features of the region and an overview of key topics, such as the origin of high-Mg magmatism, pegmatoids, and …
