Abstract

An 8-year-old unvaccinated boy presented to the emergency department 1 week after the onset of measles with a one day history of abdominal pain, subfebrile temperature, and weakness of his legs. There were no complaints of visual impairment. Physical examination revealed urinary retention, muscle weakness of both legs (he was able to move his joints against gravity, but not against examiner's resistance) without sensory impairment, an absent right and diminished left knee jerk reflex, and a diminished right Achilles tendon reflex and normal plantar reflex (left not obtainable because of a lower limb plaster cast).
