Abstract
A general canonical treatment of the influence an additional intracavity diffracting aperture has upon the transverse mode structure properties of a diffractively coupled optical cavity is described. A proof of the absence of transverse mode orthogonality between the counterpropagating eigenmodes supported by a ring cavity when additional hard edge-diffraction sources are present is provided.
