Abstract

The influence of transverse fluctuations on the dynamics of longitudinal excitations in a non-linear three-dimensional (3D) chain is investigated. Analysis of the discrete as well as the continuum model shows that a transverse fluctuation is coupled to the longitudinal direction except in a specific case. Further, it is found that a hard core nature of the potential will favor the longitudinal motion while the transverse motion tends to disturb the longitudinal motion. The present investigation shows that although a propagating pulse has a focusing ability it is extremely sensitive to transverse fluctuation.
