Abstract

Experimental data for muons in metals in strong transverse fields are usually interpreted using an approximate depolarization function, due to Abragam, which encompasses the range of muon diffusional behaviour from the static case to rapid diffusion. The accuracy of this function is assessed by comparing it with more rigorous calculations in the static, slow diffusion and rapid diffusion limits. The accuracy of the approximate function can vary for different field directions in a system.
