Abstract

Under the immediate supervision of the assistant supervisor of auxiliary personnel, the C.T.S. is an integral part of the nursing service department. In April 1955, we began the C.T.S. with a staff of 10 orderlies and one secretary. Equipped with three house phones, 13 patient carts, and 11 wheelchairs, approximately 200 calls requesting transportation service could be completed in one day. The demand for services increased, so the staff was expanded to 15 orderlies and 3 clerk secretaries. The area is equipped with 25 patient carts, 25 wheelchairs, four house lines, and two direct lines to the x-ray department on a push-button phone system. We complete from 250 to 425 calls per day, and the C.T.S. is available for service from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday through Friday, and 7:30 A.M. to 12 noon on Saturday. The first two days of the week are usually the busiest, so complete staffing by orderlies and secretaries is planned for these days. On Sundays and holidays, the Central Transportation Service is closed.
