Abstract

Adequate mobility is essential to both public enjoyment and preservation of recreation resources. Transportation strategies can help insure adequate mobility, improve the recreation experience and enhance the quality of the environment. Low cost, environmentally compatible strategies to insure adequate mobility and resource preservation are described. Actions to insure efficient use of existing facilities are traffic operations improvements to manage and control the flow of motor vehicles and preferential treatment for transit and other high occupancy vehicles. Actions to reduce vehicle use in congested areas are: regulation of visitors into the recreation resource; regulation of the time visitors spend in the recreation resource; transportation demand management; parking management and control; and provision for nonmotorized modes.
