Abstract

Irradiators are typically designed for a fixed site. Design criteria for these facilities will define massive walls for gamma ray attenuation, large water pools for source storage and maintenance, intricate handling systems to move the product or commodity through the radiation field, and many other complex support systems. A transportable facility has design problems that are unique and different from a fixed-site facility. This paper will discuss the technical difficulties and solutions to the problems that arise when an isotope irradiator is made portable over major highways. The paper will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a mobile research facility and outline the research functions that this type of irradiator can best perform.
