Abstract

In the RBaCo 2O 5+ x (R=rare earth) structure cobalt cations exist in two coordination environments—pyramidal CoO 5 (Co2) and octahedral CoO 6 (Co1). In compounds with x≈0.5 a metal–insulator (MI) transition is observed. We have found that this transition is affected by an oxygen isotope substitution and is accompanied by structural changes and melting of the orbital ordering. Measurements of transport anisotropy in single crystal of TbBaCo 2O 5.5 are presented.
