Abstract

In order to provide data for the optimization of the Purex process, actinides have been investigated in aqueous and non-aqueous solutions of practical importance. The diffusion coefficients of Th(NO 3) 4, U(NO 3) 4, Np(NO 3) 4, NpO 2NO 3, NpO 2(NO 3) 2, Pu(NO 3) 4, PuO 2(NO 3) 2 in aqueous HNO 3 and of PuCl 3 in HCl solution have been determined by use of an analytical ultracentrifuge. Furthermore, the diffusion coefficients and solution viscosities of the UO 2(NO 3) 2·2TBP complex were measured in pure tributylphosphate (TBP), TBP- n-hexane and TBP- n-dodecane mixtures. Finally, the conductance and transference behaviour of these actinides were also studied by applying both modem theories of conductance and a radioisotope method for the measurement of transference numbers.
