Abstract

The relaxation approximation to the Boltzmann transport equation provides a procedure for obtaining the transport coefficients of dilute gases. It is somewhat more complicated than the elementary mean free path method, but is well within the capabilities of students in undergraduate physical chemistry courses. It has the pedagogical advantages of emphasizing the non equilibrium of transport, avoiding suspect geometric arguments, and providing an indication of how transport coefficients are obtained in rigorous treatments.
