Abstract

This paper deals basically with the development of a scale-up criterion for the residence time distribution of material flowing in rotating drums. A characteristics time was deduced from the dimensionless holdup and feed rate of material. The time was used to calculate a scale-up variance which depends only on the characteristics time scale. This criterion can be used to predict the residence time distribution under various operating conditions for drums of different dimensions. The predicted RTD agreed well with the experimental values.
