Abstract
It was determined in a previous study that the polyethylene catheter,9absorbable gelatin sponge (Gelfoam), and oral mucosa were well tolerated in the ears of experimental animals in a situation entailing no movement. The present experiments deal with transplants at the oval window, where the polyethylene prosthesis was articulated with the incus as in the Shea6operation. Hence motion of the transplants through the ossicular chain was involved. Materials used in the study of the ears of 6 cats were: polyethylene No. 90 catheter, absorbable gelatin sponge, autogenous oral mucosa, and vein grafts. Surgical microscopy with aseptic technique was employed. The stapedial arch and entire footplate were removed through the bulla approach, leaving membranous labyrinth, eardrum, and remaining ossicles intact. Broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage was given the cats. None developed infection or gross symptoms of labyrinthitis. The cats were killed in from 2 to 4 months by intravital fixation,
