Abstract
Chapter 3 further develops a historical materialist approach to identify moments or historical turning points that may serve to redefine the political ‘limits of the possible’ in world order. Its key methodological assumption is that assessment of world order prospects requires a perspective that is long term and global (both in the sense of geographical and relatively all-encompassing). Such a perspective indicates, first, that there is no ‘end of history’, and second, limits of the possible are reproduced/transformed by collective action.
