Abstract

In addition to protecting optical fibers from abrasion, polymer coatings can make fibers less susceptible to microbending loss.12 This study determines the effect of ribbon1 2 3 fabrication and subsequent thermal cycling on the transmission loss of optical fibers having the following different coatings: (1) the ultraviolet-radiation-cured (UVRC) urethane acrylate used in the initial Bell System FT3 installations4; (2) a UVRC epoxy acrylate5; and (3) a dual coating created by applying a secondary coating of the same urethane acrylate used in (1) over a primary coating of Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. KE 103 RTV silicone.
