Abstract
Muskmelon necrotic spot virus, a new disease of greenhouse-grown melons, was transmitted to 13 and 8% of muskmelon test plants by the western spotted cucumber beetle, Diabrotica undecimpunctata undecimpunctata Mannerheim, and the banded cucumber beetle, Diabrotica balteata LeConte, respectively. The virus also was recovered from extracts from these beetles. This demonstration of insect transmission of the virus means that dissemination of this seed-borne virus in commercially grown melons is a definite possibility.
