Abstract
The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) standard is widely used for coding still images. It is very sensitive to transmission errors and can be employed successfully only when the transmission channel is nearly error free. Wireless communication channels are characterized by long bursts of data errors, and average bit error rates (BERs) of 10−3 to 10−4 are typical in cellular mobile radio channels. This paper presents an efficient scheme to transmit JPEG-coded images over wireless channels. In addition, some postprocessing techniques — used for error concealment of JPEG images transmitted over wireless channels — are discussed. The paper also demonstrates the effectiveness of the postprocessing techniques for a diverse set of images obtained from indoor radio channel experiments.
