Abstract

Abstract In this paper, transmission of beyond 100 Gbit/s eight-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-8) signal in O-band over 40-km single mode fiber (SMF) with 10-GHz class direct modulated laser (DML) was experimentally demonstrated. Receiver-side feed-forward equalizer (FFE) with decision-forward equalizer (DFE) is a promising approach to compensate the bandwidth limitation caused linear distortion, while the nonlinear-distortion is compensated by look-up-table (LUT). The experiment results show that the bit-error-ratio (BER) of 40 Gbaud PAM-8 signal with joint pre-equalization and LUT technique is still under hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold (3.8 × 10−3) after 40-km SMF transmission at −4.5 dBm received optical power (ROP).
