Abstract

A qualitative and quantitative infrared method for surface group determination on silica gel is presented. Carbon tetrachloride is used to reduce scattering so that the sample transmits light throughout the region of interest (near-infrared: 8000-4000 cm −1. The technique is shown to be useful in studying water adsorption, 2H 2O exchange and trimethylchlorosilane reaction with silanol groups on the silica surface.
