Abstract

The dispersion characteristics of inhomogeneous dielectric waveguides are studied using a transverse transmission line representation. With the techniques of distributed circuit analysis the behavior of graded index optical fiber is explained using network theoretic ideas. Specifically, network models are developed through which insight as to the mechanisms underlying the dispersion characteristics of such structures is gained from a transmission line filter analogy. For the case of circular geometries, new approximations for the radial Bessel functions are presented which again results in a simple transmission line filter.
