Abstract

The efficiency of electrical dispersion compensation (EDC), by means of a simple electrical dispersive line, at the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) sides in optical single sideband transmission systems is investigated. Significant improvement of the eye opening penalty (EOP) is observed using EDC-TX, when linear transmission is assumed, compared to the EDC-RX proposed in previous works. An EOP degradation of 1 dB is attained using EDC-TX and 10 Gb/s return to zero pulse format after 1000 km standard single mode fiber linear transmission. A Q factor higher than 8 is attained using EDC-TX and a non-linear transmission system with 11/spl times/80 km spans, without optical dispersion compensation.
