Abstract

The formation of microcrystals of Fe 7C 3 from the disproportionation of CO on Fe at 500°C is described. Selected area electron diffraction confirms that the structure is orthorhombic, in agreement with the work of Fruchart et al. Analysis of a structural fault present in these crystals - imaged using high resolution dark field electron microscopy - leads to a plausible explanation for the variety of structures previously reported for Fe 7C 3.
