Abstract

The microstructure and elemental compositions of electroless-plated disk were studied by high resolution electron microscopy(HREM). It was found that grains were isolated from each other by a 1nm width of amorphous grain boundaries in high recording density media. Segregation of zinc at the grain boundaries and the role of its codeposition were revealed by an electron nanoprobe (10A, 20A)in a HREM. The c-axis orientation of h.c.p. cobalt crystal was investigated with respect to high coercivity by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXRD) measurement.
