Abstract

SummaryTransmission Controllability (TC) andcontrast ratio (CR) of PCGH liquid crystalcells with 6, 9 and 12pm thickness have beenobtained from the transmission versus wave-length data. Both TC and CR depend on thepolarization of the incident light withrespect to homogeneous wall alignment andthe wavelength of incident light. TC decreases and CR increases with increasingcell thickness. TC and CR attain maximawhen the incident light is polarizedparallel to the homogeneous wall alignmentand the wavelengths are restricted to 600to 650nm range. PCGH cells with one polar -izer have better TC.CR products than thetwisted nematic and dynamic scattering cellsin 600 to 650nm range. We have also observed anomalous trans-mission dips in transmission vs. voltagecharacteristics of PCGH -cells. These dipsoccur only in 400 to 500nm wavelength range. The magnitude of the dip is dependent onthe history of the cell and the sweep rateof voltage. Further study is in progressto understand this anomalous behavior.
