Abstract

The transmission characteristics of asymmetric Y-junctions with different taper configurations have been investigated by using the beam propagation method. The Y-junctions treated here operate as a beam splitter in the single-mode range. It is found that the power splitting ratio depends strongly on the taper configuration and the junction angle. An oscillatory power splitting always occurs by the coupling between output branches when the junction angle is small. The Y-junction with no taper can be used for coupling out the greater part of power guided in the main waveguide.
