Abstract

Transient effects of signal transmission in a multimode fiber are investigated in a simple two-mode waveguide model. This paper discusses the condition on which the impulse response or base-band frequency response is defined. Several closed form expressions of the impulse, or frequency, response are derived and their physical implications discussed. The effect of mode scrambling at fiber splices are elucidated in view of the temporal (or phase) difference between modes.
