Abstract

BACKGROUND: Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) is emerging as a novel approach in minimally invasive surgery. Cholecystectomy, the most common elective procedure in general surgery, has benefited from the minimally invasive approach, and may be applicable for NOTES. METHODS: A literature search was performed in PubMed. The results are analyzed together with our work at the University of Missouri. RESULTS: Fifteen articles, ten animal studies and five human case reports, were found. Mostly, transluminal cholecystectomy is performed as a hybrid procedure with laparoscopy regardless of the transluminal route used. Retraction, exposure and stable dissection are hurdles that need attention. All human studies used a hybrid approach with one ore more laparoscopic ports. Cholecystectomies were successful without any complication in all patients reported. CONCLUSIONS: Further development in technology needs to be done, so that pure NOTES cholecystectomy will become a reality in clinical practice.
