Abstract

The linkage between research and nursing practice represents a dynamic interplay–practice informs research in the realities of clinical practice and research evidence is translated to practice to improve the quality of care. TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH REPRESENTS a dynamic interplay between research and practice inextricably linking research and practice. To improve the quality of pediatric nursing practice, it is imperative to translate research into practice. The linkage between research and practice represents a dynamic interplay – that is, practice informs research in the everyday practical realities of clinical practice, and, in turn, research is designed to inform practice with the ultimate goal of improving care and health outcomes for children and their families. The key to this complex relationship is discovered in translating research evidence into practice. Through the translation of research, this linkage is clearly defined in the realities of clinical practice. With the discovery of these practical realities, research is designed to incorporate these elements from practice into the design of the study. Ultimately, the evidence obtained from research is integrated into clinical practice leading to improved quality of care for children and their families. Research enhances pediatric nursing practice through translation of evidence to improve nursing practice; but, making this connection is essential (Christian, 2013a). If nursing research is high quality, and the findings are translated effectively, then the quality of pediatric nursing practice will be improved. Translating research evidence into pediatric nursing practice improves the quality of care, as well as child and family health outcomes (Christian, 2012a, 2012b). The best quality health outcomes are linked to evidence-based practice (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011), resulting in improved quality of children's health outcomes (Hockenberry & Wilson, 2011).
