Abstract

Many institutions highly value technology development and commercialization, and list these activities as criteria for consideration for faculty tenure and promotion. Funding for such research can be through regular R‐type grants (R01, R21 and R03). However, if the technology requires proof‐of‐principal testing (for example demonstrating functional prototype devices, specific siRNAs, new drug molecules) partnering with the business community might enable access to small business innovation research (SBIR) and small business technology transfer research (STTR) grants. Specific examples of university/small business partnerships and technologies will be described, and tips for finding/creating partnerships and preparing these proposals will be covered.
