Abstract

The stress associated with parenting and caregiving is compounded when children and adolescents are diagnosed with chronic conditions or special healthcare needs. The broad nature of stress requires parents, families, and children to cope with the additional stress associated with the child's chronic condition or special healthcare needs, adapt to the child's ongoing care management, and focus on maintaining quality of life for their families. Further, parent caregivers experience stress and role change when confronted with the healthcare transition from pediatric to adult healthcare for their adolescent and young adult children with chronic conditions or special healthcare needs. Developing resilience through emotional support and living in supportive neighborhoods may facilitate coping by parents and their children. The role of nursing presence and parent peer support is integral to mitigating parental stress during adaptation to stressful situations associated with the child's healthcare.
