Abstract

High-resolution translational energy spectroscopy (0.15 eV FWHM) has been performed on 3 keV O + scattered off He, Kr and O 2. In the O +He and the O +Kr collision systems, the only transition observed is the spin-allowed transition O +( 2 P ⇌ 2 D). In the O +O 2 collision system, the same transition dominates, but spin-forbidden transitions are also observed including O 2 1Δ g ← X 3Σ − g ). Other electronic transitions are identified and their strengths are linked to their adherence to Wigner electron spin conservation rule.
