Abstract
High-resolution translational energy spectra are presented of inelastic CH +-He and CH 2+-He collisions. An excited electronic state of CH 2+, of 2Σ + symmetry, is located at an energy of 12.3 eV above the ground electronic state. This excited state is metastable despite the existence of a large number of channels open for rapid decay by predissociation or dipole-allowed photon emission.
