Abstract
Rimi Chatterjee addresses the current practice of translation in India and explores the ongoing debate concerning the intended audience for these translations. Chatterjee argues that Indian translators must keep their Indian readers in mind in the course of translating scholarly, educational, and popular literature. Professional standards of scholarly translations must be established, including editorial conventions of annotation and citation, which suit the particular needs of the Indian communities of readers, whether scholarly or otherwise.
